This month we’re celebrating Trustees’ Week by looking behind the scenes at the Board here at Apples & Pears. We’re delighted to have this opportunity to tell you about the great work our Trustees do as well as highlighting areas which you could get involved in.
What’s a Trustee?
Our Board of Trustees is a volunteer management team and together they make important decisions about the charity’s work.
The term “Trustee” sounds very grand and serious and it’s true that the average age of a Trustee in this country is 59 years old. But if you’re thinking our Trustees must be retired business people, you couldn’t be more wrong.
At Apples & Pears we’re lucky enough to have a wonderfully vibrant and varied team from all walks of life. This means as well as helping with big decisions and legal requirements, they make sure we’re up to date with the latest trends and they bring new ideas based on their personal experiences and insights.
Who are our Trustees?
We’re very fortunate to have a strong team leading our organisation and all of the individuals on our Board have been carefully chosen for their diverse skills, interests and talents.
You can learn more about the full team here.
Our Board has grown as we’ve developed as an organisation. We’re proud that our founding Trustees are still with us, but we’re also very excited about three recent additions to the team and we’d like to take this opportunity to tell you more about them.
Monique will help with our development, growing relationships with potential donors and other like-minded organisations. She joined the team because she wants to support young children in expanding their horizons and growing their hopes for the future. The charity’s work also ties in with another of her passions: multicultural events. Monique loves the multicultural aspect of London and the opportunities it provides to interact with people of different races, religions and backgrounds.
“There are so many wonderful events that take place throughout the year in celebration of these cultures and I enjoy participating in all of them – from Black History Month and Oktoberfest to Holi.”
Mel is an experienced trip volunteer and will help to establish partnerships with new schools. She got involved with Apples & Pears to get to know some local families, while having fun. She’s also excited to help Apples & Pears expand and reach more people.
“My favourite thing is bumping into families I’ve been on trips with in the street and stopping for a chat. It makes Shadwell feel a little more like home!”
Daniel will head up fundraising and his role will be to help secure the income we need to expand and enrich the lives of more and more children. He is very excited about the opportunity to help children engage with London’s cultural treasures.
“Cultural experiences are inspiring, and the more of them we have as children the more well-rounded we are as adults.”
Who else is involved?
Our Board is supported by a team of Business Volunteers who help with specific activities based on their skills and experience – everything from running our social media channels to managing projects.
We’re always excited to hear from new people who are interested in being part of the team. So if you’ve volunteered on a trip and would like to explore more ways to get involved, or even if this is the first you’ve heard of us, please do get in touch to say hello.
