It’s been a particularly exciting month at Apples & Pears. We kicked off the new school year by inviting supporters, partners and friends to a fundraising event to celebrate our fifth birthday.
It was a fantastic opportunity to gather everyone together to reflect on what we’ve achieved so far and to thank everyone who has been part of the journey.
The night kicked off with a speech by long-time supporter Alison who celebrated the achievements of the organisation – from helping hundreds of people discover the joys of museums, to encouraging families to spend quality time together. We also learned that the ideas and values which Apples & Pears has brought to school communities are now being taken on and nurtured by parents themselves. Over the summer holidays a group of parents had taken the initiative to organise some of their own trips to cultural sites. They were inspired by the term-time trips they’d been on and now feel confident enough to plan their own excursions – a great sign that Apples & Pears is empowering people and changing behaviour in the longer term.
Next there was a welcome speech by our CEO and Founder Khawar who recapped on successes to date – including expanding from offering trips to schools based in Tower Hamlets to also covering Southwark, Greenwich, Lewisham and Lambeth. He told us that since Apples & Pears began in 2012, it has organised trips for 1,500 primary school children!
From this point onwards the main focus of the night was having a good time and, most importantly, fundraising!
We had a superb raffle which our supporters generously donated prizes for. The amazing list of prizes included everything from a tour of the House of Lords to a Burberry handbag and a signed England cricket shirt. With such an enticing array of prizes, we’re thrilled to say that we raised over £2,000 from the raffle entries.
In total the event raised over £4,500 which will be put to good use – starting the ball rolling for our 2018/2019 budget well ahead of the game!
The team at Apples & Pears is delighted that so many people were able to find the time to attend the event and it was great to see such a variety of people there. The guests on the night included everyone from Lord Stone of Blackheath, to parents from partner schools and cultural organisations.
There are a couple of quotes from the night that we’d particularly like to share.
Rachel, a long term trip volunteer said: “The 5th Birthday Party was so special, bringing together everyone involved in making this amazing grassroots charity what it is. From the speeches telling the story of Apples & Pears and showing the real impact it’s having, to the excitement over the brilliant raffle prizes, there was such a great atmosphere. It was a lovely reminder of how passionate people can share ideas to support young Londoners to be inspired by their city.”
Our CEO Khawar wraps up his thoughts on the event by saying: “Five years feels like it’s flown by, but the party was a great reminder of how many people have made Apples & Pears a part of their lives in that time. We’re a grassroots project that has come alive as a community of its own and we’re incredibly grateful so many of our partners and supporters came along to celebrate with us. Thank you!”
Which just leaves us to say a huge thank you to those who came along and everyone who has supported us over the past five years.
It was a great night and we look forward to seeing you again soon!
