It’s not often that we get the chance to update you on what’s going on behind the scenes here at Apples & Pears. So, for this month’s blog, we’d like to shine the spotlight on two new business support volunteers who have recently joined the team.
First though, you might be wondering, what is a business support volunteer? They are volunteers who generously give up some of their time to help us run the business side of things. They support the board by helping with specific activities based on their skills and experience – everything from running our social media channels to managing projects.
We’ve recently signed up Sarah and Sophia who are donating their skills and talent to helping run things behind the scenes here. We wanted to give them an opportunity to say hello.
Sarah Austin, Digital Marketing
“I feel fortunate that I am doing something I enjoy alongside people who are friendly, focused and professional.”
What made you decide to join the team at Apples & Pears?
I had been looking for a voluntary role which involved supporting or engaging with children in some way, but any commitment I made had to fit around being a mum, and for now staying close to home. The role fitted perfectly.
Why did you decide to donate your time to Apples & Pears as opposed to another charity?
There is a vitality and energy within the organisation, a positive and determined attitude to all it sets its heart to. My day job these days is being a full time mum, but I am a qualified primary school teacher.
I have seen how valuable the currency of a shared experience or a recounted outing from the weekend can be in a school environment. With the right balance of fun, adventure and care, Apples & Pears sets its goal on providing opportunities to enhance and enrich childhoods.
What does your role involve?
Each month I put together the Apples & Pears newsletter using the latest blog, trip reports, fundraising updates and requests, as well as listing current volunteering opportunities. The newsletter serves as a means to thank our incredible supporters, increase the Apples & Pears community and provide inspiration.
Sophia Neuhaus, Digital Content Producer
“The great thing about volunteering is you can use your passion for a cause you deeply care about.”
Why did you decide to donate your time to Apples & Pears?
The charity has a very simple concept – I find it appealing that we try to make a difference with easy solutions. One of the main reasons I wanted to get involved with Apples & Pears was the fact that they work with children in primary schools. So many problems later in life can be prevented by ensuring that young children have positive experiences. I also believe it’s very important that all children have the chance to enjoy the many riches of the city they live in.
What does your role involve?
As a digital content producer, I prepare posts for the Apples & Pears Facebook page and Instagram account. I write trip reviews and updates on events, like the upcoming birthday party in September. I also volunteer on the school trips to gain a better understanding of what I am writing about.
What are you particularly looking forward to in your new role?
I like that I am not on my own, but am working in a team. The communications team works together to produce content; we also give each other feedback and inspiration. I look forward to experimenting with our different social media channels and as Apples & Pears is likely to evolve over time, the digital content is likely to look different too.
Apples & Pears is on the lookout for more volunteers to put their skills to good use. This doesn’t necessarily need to be a huge time commitment – it could be a few hours a month – so if you’re interested in finding out how you could get involved, please do get in touch to say hello.
